U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez (D-IL) has introduced the Reimagining Safety Act, a legislative proposal aimed at dismantling the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The bill seeks to abolish both Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), replacing them with a new Cabinet-level Department of Community Safety.

According to the proposal, the legislation would redirect approximately $150 billion in DHS funding toward community-based programs. It also includes plans to move the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Coast Guard to the Department of Transportation. Additionally, Ramirez has expressed intent to terminate the surveillance tower program currently used along the southern border.

The proposal has drawn significant criticism. Border czar Tom Homan argued that ICE is essential for public safety and narcotics investigations, stating that the agency will not be abolished. Republican lawmakers have also criticized the move, with some suggesting the bill could empower individuals with little loyalty to the U.S. to dismantle national security infrastructure from within.
