Rep. Don Bacon Rebukes Trump Over Greenland Claim at NATO Summit
U.S. Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska publicly warned President Donald Trump after the NATO summit in Turkey, where Trump again asserted that the United States should control Greenland. Bacon said the president’s remarks “undermine the trust of European allies and NATO partners” and that “the stupid comments about Greenland are harming us enormously in Europe.” He added that such rhetoric could lead to impeachment if Trump pursued military action to seize the island.
Senator Lisa Murkowski backed Bacon’s stance, urging Congress to defend Greenland’s sovereignty. Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s premier Múte Bourup Egede both rejected Trump’s proposal, stating that Greenland is not for sale and that the island remains under Danish authority.
The episode highlights tensions between the U.S. president’s Arctic ambitions and NATO allies’ concerns over strategic stability.
