Rep. Ilhan Omar faces federal investigation into immigration and identity

U.S. federal authorities are conducting an investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) regarding allegations of immigration fraud, conspiracy, and making false statements. The probe, reportedly involving the Department of Homeland Security’s Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Unit, is examining whether Omar or her father provided false information on immigration and naturalization documents.

Homeland Security agents recently executed a search warrant at Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence, seizing 17 items, including phones, a camera, and a passport. Investigators are scrutinizing her identity and marriage history, specifically focusing on her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. While Omar has repeatedly denied allegations that Elmi is her brother, federal court filings have referred to her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.”

The investigation also reportedly includes a probe into whether Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, committed war crimes while serving as a colonel in the Somali military under the Siad Barre regime. Additionally, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is reportedly looking into Omar’s finances. Some members of Omar’s family have received grand jury subpoenas as part of the ongoing inquiry.
