Part of situation: Federal investigation into Ilhan Omar (2 clusters)

Ilhan Omar shares video featuring Somali song with combative lyrics

Ilhan Omar Somali music Washington Free Beacon Minnesota federal investigation

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) posted a 27-second video on social media showing her walking beside a Minnesota lake with her husband, Tim Mynett. The clip was set to the song “Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya” by Somali rapper Ilkacase Qays and singer Hodan Abdirahman.

A certified English translation of the Somali lyrics, commissioned by the Washington Free Beacon, describes themes of confrontation and the humiliation of enemies. The lyrics include phrases such as, “If I confront you in the afternoon, by evening, I will teach you a lesson,” and “Yes, you will suffer and cry in seething.”

While Omar’s caption described the video as “Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes,” the Free Beacon interpreted the musical choice as a response to President Donald Trump and ongoing federal investigations into Omar’s immigration records and financial disclosures. Omar has previously been filmed appearing with the song's performers at various events.
