Rep. Jared Golden backs Trump tariffs on Canadian imports
U.S. Representative Jared Golden (D-ME) has expressed support for President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50 percent tariffs on more than $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. The tariffs were implemented following a breakdown in trade negotiations between the United States and Canada.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will implement matching tariffs of up to 50 percent on American goods beginning September 8. The trade dispute significantly impacts the state of Maine, as pulp and paper products—among the state’s largest exports—are included in the targeted goods.
Golden, who is not seeking reelection and represents a rural district that has supported Trump in three presidential elections, is an exception within Maine’s congressional delegation regarding this issue. He stated, “If Canada thinks they’re better off without our goods, I wish them good luck. I suspect in the long run, it won’t go well for them.”
Vice President JD Vance defended the administration's actions during a visit to Brewer, stating the tariffs aim to ensure Maine “gets a fair deal.” Meanwhile, Canadian leaders have pushed back, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticizing the Trump administration's approach.
