Rep. Jason Smith addresses U.S.-Canada trade disputes and tax legislation

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith has addressed ongoing trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Smith noted that Canadian restrictions on U.S. liquor and wine have had direct economic consequences, including job losses at a barrel manufacturing company in his Missouri district.

Smith also criticized Canada’s treatment of U.S. dairy producers and advocated for the use of all available leverage to secure a strong trade agreement. Beyond trade, he highlighted constituent concerns regarding affordability, specifically the rising costs of gasoline and diesel for the agricultural sector.

Additionally, Smith discussed a digital asset tax bill that recently advanced in his committee with a 38-5 vote. The legislation aims to establish federal tax rules for digital currency to provide the regulatory certainty necessary for the U.S. to become a global leader in the crypto industry.
