Rep. LaMonica McIver announces pregnancy amid federal assault charges

U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) has announced her pregnancy amid ongoing legal proceedings that could result in up to 17 years in prison. The charges stem from a May 2025 incident at a New Jersey ICE facility, where McIver and other officials were filmed obstructing and hitting law enforcement officers during a protest.

McIver previously argued that her arrest interfered with her legislative duties, but a federal appeals court ruled in August that she is not immune from prosecution. While legal analysts suggest she may receive a suspended sentence, probation, or community service, the potential for a lengthy prison term remains.

In a social media statement, McIver addressed the timing of her pregnancy, stating, “People might find it crazy that even though I’m facing 17 years in prison, I made the decision to get pregnant. But, at the end of the day, this is something I couldn’t let be consumed by this administration.”
