Maria Elvira Salazar criticizes Trump's immigration enforcement
Republican Representative Maria Elvira Salazar has issued a direct challenge to President Donald Trump, stating in a new campaign advertisement that his immigration enforcement efforts have “gone too far.” Representing Florida’s 27th District, Salazar warned that the aggressive deportation and detention policies are causing Hispanic voters, who supported Trump in 2024, to feel “betrayed.”
Salazar cited data from July, noting that approximately 50,000 people were detained and that roughly 50 percent of those individuals had no criminal record or pending charges. While she clarified that she is not advocating for amnesty, she urged the administration to seek solutions that provide migrants with a “dignified life.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded sharply to Salazar’s criticism, maintaining that the administration will continue its mass deportation campaign. A DHS spokesperson stated that there will be “no amnesty for illegal immigrants, now or ever,” and asserted that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is simply enforcing laws approved by Congress. This political friction occurs as Salazar faces a competitive re-election race against Democrat Eliott Rodriguez ahead of the November midterm elections.
