Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar criticizes Trump's immigration enforcement

Florida Republican Representative Maria Elvira Salazar has issued a public critique of President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement policies, warning that they have “gone too far.” In a campaign advertisement filmed in front of the White House, Salazar stated that the aggressive enforcement measures are causing Hispanic voters, who were instrumental in Trump's 2024 victory, to feel “betrayed.”

Salazar highlighted data from July, noting that approximately 50,000 individuals were detained by immigration authorities, with roughly 50% of those detainees having no criminal record or pending charges. She cautioned the President that some of his advisers may be “compromising his legacy” by providing an incomplete picture of the impact of these policies on his base.

In a subsequent interview on CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” Salazar described a direct conversation with Trump as “fantastic” and “receptive,” though she did not confirm if he agreed to her suggestions. While Salazar urged the administration to preserve its support among Hispanic voters, President Trump maintained his support for her re-election in Florida's 27th District while explicitly disagreeing with her stance on immigration.

The Department of Homeland Security and the House Freedom Caucus have pushed back against her claims, asserting that agents are simply enforcing laws passed by Congress and that any concessions regarding legal status would constitute amnesty.
