Rep. Ro Khanna signals 2028 presidential interest and unveils childcare plan

U.S. Representative Ro Khanna has signaled his interest in a potential 2028 presidential campaign, describing the decision as a “family decision.” During a discussion at the Asia Society with former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Khanna noted that approximately 20 Democrats are considering a run for the presidency, with 10 to 12 likely to enter the race.

Khanna outlined his political priorities, emphasizing the need for an economic program that supports communities that have lost industrial jobs. He argued that the 2028 election will center on whether the United States embraces diversity or turns inward. He also linked economic security to the immigration debate, suggesting that investment in excluded communities is a more effective response than blaming immigrants for economic shifts.

As part of his legislative focus, Khanna unveiled the “Free Child Care for America Act,” a nearly $1 trillion, 10-year proposal aimed at establishing a universal childcare system. The plan includes taxpayer-funded pathways to provide flexibility for families, increase childcare supply, and raise compensation for the workforce. To offset costs, Khanna suggested measures such as a 5% “billionaire tax,” reducing the Pentagon budget, and savings from ending the war in Iran.
