Rep. Thomas Massie's Primary Defeat Highlights GOP Vulnerability Ahead of Midterms

Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky lost his primary last week to former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Massie, who had publicly broken with Trump on issues such as the war in Iran, the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and criticism of the proposed White House ballroom project, told Meet the Press that the GOP will be “very vulnerable” in the upcoming midterm elections. He said the party’s focus on costly projects and alienating voters could jeopardize its hold on Congress.

On the same program, Democratic Representative Ro Khanna called Massie “a real friend” and expressed sadness over his loss, while also urging an expansion of the Supreme Court to counter recent partisan rulings. Both discussions underscore internal GOP tensions and the broader political stakes ahead of November’s contests.
