Rep. Tom Kean Jr. faces scrutiny over absence and use of taxpayer funds

Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey is facing criticism regarding his recent absence from Congress and his use of taxpayer-funded communications. Kean was absent from Capitol Hill for nearly four months, from March 5 to June 30, 2026, during which he missed more than 140 roll call votes. While his office initially cited a “personal medical issue,” Kean later disclosed on the House floor that he had been hospitalized following a nervous breakdown and a diagnosis of depression.

During his absence, Kean’s office utilized official taxpayer funds to issue social media posts and email messages highlighting district activities and funding announcements. Critics and political opponents have alleged that these franked communications, intended to keep constituents informed, were used to promote his reelection campaign.

Additionally, Kean has drawn scrutiny for recent social media attacks against his Democratic opponent, Rebecca Bennett, accusing her of staying “hidden” from voters. Commentators have noted the irony of these claims given Kean’s own lengthy, unexplained absence from his duties.
