Repair Café programs promote sustainability in New Jersey and Ontario
Community-led Repair Café programs are being utilized in Roxbury, New Jersey, and Ajax, Ontario, to promote sustainability and reduce landfill waste by repairing broken household items.
In Roxbury, a collaborative effort between the Roxbury Public Library, Lake Hopatcong Foundation, and Roxbury Township Recycling will host a free event on October 17. Volunteer fixers will assist with electronics, bicycles, clothing, woodworking, and various household appliances. While services are free, owners may be responsible for the cost of specialized parts.
In Ajax, a similar program launched at the local main library connects residents with volunteers skilled in IT, mechanical repairs, and sewing. The initiative aims to provide free assistance to community members while keeping items like lamps, vacuums, and sewing machines out of the waste stream. Volunteers, including students and professionals, use the program to share technical knowledge and practical skills.
