Replit selects OpenAI as preferred AI partner over Anthropic

Replit has announced that OpenAI is now its preferred AI partner, making OpenAI models the default provider for its platform. This shift moves Anthropic from its previous primary role to a secondary position.

CEO Amjad Masad cited cost efficiency, performance, and strategic partnership as the primary drivers for the decision. Internal benchmarks used by Replit to evaluate the ability of models to build applications from scratch favored OpenAI’s models. While OpenAI is now the default for the Replit Agent tool, the platform maintains flexibility by allowing users to manually select Anthropic’s Claude models or other supported AI systems.

Previously, Replit was one of Anthropic’s five largest customers. Although the partnership with Anthropic remains active and its models are still promoted in Replit’s documentation, the strategic focus has shifted toward OpenAI to optimize development capabilities and pricing.
