Report Highlights Bullying of Christian Children in Sri Lanka Schools

A study by the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL) documenting incidents from 2023 to 2025 found that Christian children in Sri Lanka face repeated bullying and discrimination in schools. The report describes peer harassment, teachers scolding students for attending church, prohibiting Bible reading, and forcing participation in non‑Christian rituals under threat of expulsion. Several incidents were cited, including intimidation of a 12‑year‑old son of a pastor in Hambantota District, a physical assault on eleven church members in Gampaha District, and an attack on a pastor’s 14‑year‑old son in Nuwara Eliya District. The study notes that while Buddhism is the majority religion, about 7.6 % of the population is Christian, most of whom are Roman Catholic, and religion is a compulsory subject in national examinations. Rights groups and interfaith organisations have urged the Sri Lankan government and education authorities to enforce existing protections and introduce comprehensive anti‑discrimination measures in schools.
