Reproductive health experts advise fertility assessments beyond menstrual regularity

Medical experts are highlighting the importance of understanding reproductive health beyond menstrual regularity. While regular periods indicate consistent ovulation, they do not necessarily guarantee sufficient egg quantity or quality. Clinical assessments, such as Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) testing and ultrasound for follicle counts, are recommended to accurately gauge ovarian reserve.

Age 35 is identified as a critical clinical threshold, after which egg quality and chromosomal abnormality rates increase significantly. Women in high-risk groups—including those with high-stress jobs, irregular sleep patterns, history of ovarian surgery, or family histories of early menopause—are advised to consider fertility preservation through egg freezing.

Additionally, the medical community is noting a shift in terminology from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This change emphasizes that the condition is not merely about ovarian appearance, but is deeply linked to endocrine and metabolic balance, including inflammation and insulin resistance, which can disrupt follicle development.
