Republic of Ireland squad named ahead of Nations League matches against Israel

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson has named a 26-man squad for the upcoming Nations League campaign, which includes controversial fixtures against Israel. Hallgrímsson confirmed he held individual conversations with players regarding the matches, noting that while “none of us feel comfortable playing these games,” the team remains united in their commitment to perform.

Notable absences from the squad include Seamus Coleman, Robbie Brady, and the injured Nathan Collins. The squad also features Owen Elding, who recently became an Irish citizen, and 18-year-old Rory Finneran.

The fixtures against Israel are set to take place in Debrecen, Hungary, and Bačka Topola, Serbia. Due to the sensitive nature of the matches, national broadcaster RTÉ has announced it will provide minimal coverage, fulfilling its contractual obligations without studio build-ups, pundits, or in-house commentary. The broadcaster has also declined all advertising or sponsorship linked to these specific games.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) previously requested that UEFA separate the two nations in the draw, but the request was rejected. The controversy follows a motion by FAI members to ban Israel from international competition, citing alleged violations of UEFA statutes.
