Republic of the Congo initiates electoral and digital reforms
The Republic of the Congo has begun preparatory operations for the legislative and local elections scheduled for July 2027. In Pointe-Noire, the Director-General of Electoral Affairs, Jean-Claude Etoumbakoundou, met with local authorities to review the progress of electoral groundwork. Key tasks include electoral mapping, which involves determining constituency boundaries and identifying polling station locations.
In a separate administrative push, the government plans to connect various databases starting in 2027 to enhance tax collection, monitor public spending, and improve coordination between agencies. The digitization strategy prioritizes birth certificates, criminal records, and civil service personnel records. This initiative follows assessments by the World Bank and the United Nations that identified challenges in data interoperability and institutional coordination. A $100 million World Bank-backed project is intended to support these digital transformation efforts.
