Republican Assembly to hold extraordinary session over Filo Jet disaster

The Speaker of the Republican Assembly, Ziya Öztürkler, has announced that an extraordinary parliamentary session will be convened to address the Filo Jet disaster, which involved a vessel capsizing off the coast of Girne.

Both the government and the main opposition have submitted petitions to establish a parliamentary research committee to investigate the incident in full detail. Petitions were filed by CTP Chairperson Sıla Usar İncirli and her parliamentary group, followed by submissions from Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu.

Öztürkler stated that the assembly will not wait for the scheduled October 5 session, as the situation requires urgent discussion and the introduction of immediate legislation. While search and rescue operations for missing persons continue, Öztürkler emphasized the importance of coordinating the session date to ensure maximum parliamentary participation and transparency regarding the ongoing crisis.
