Republican Base Demoralized Ahead of 2026 US Midterms

New polling ahead of the November 2026 U.S. midterm elections shows that roughly one in five traditionally reliable Republican voters in key swing states – Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, Montana, New Hampshire and Michigan – are considering staying home or voting for Democrats. The decline in enthusiasm is attributed chiefly to high inflation and a weak economic outlook. "That is a large share, a frightening number," said Nathan Nascimento, executive director of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity Action.

A Washington Post and Ipsos survey also indicates that Democratic voters who are confident they will turn out are ahead of Republicans by ten percentage points. Motivation is especially low among men under 40, a demographic that was crucial to Donald Trump’s 2024 victory.
