Republican candidates adjust messaging regarding Donald Trump

As the midterm elections approach, some Republican candidates are subtly adjusting their campaign messaging to manage their relationship with Donald Trump. While the majority of candidates continue to embrace the former president to mobilize his loyalist base, a small number of candidates in states such as California, Texas, Kentucky, and Alaska have begun to downplay their connection to him.

These shifts are often subtle, involving changes to website headlines or campaign imagery. For example, Texas Republican congressional candidate Carlos De La Cruz recently removed the phrase ‘Trump Conservative’ from his website, replacing it with ‘Proven Conservative,’ though his campaign denied any intentional distancing.

Vulnerable candidates face a delicate balancing act: they must appeal to voters beyond the MAGA base to win general elections while avoiding a backlash from Trump and his core supporters. The National Republican Congressional Committee has dismissed reports of distancing as a ‘manufactured storyline,’ maintaining that candidates remain eager to campaign alongside the former president.
