Republican candidates distance themselves from Trump in competitive U.S. races
A Reuters review of 62 competitive U.S. House and Senate races found that two-thirds of Republican candidates are attempting to distance themselves from Donald Trump ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
In 41 of these contested races, candidates have either diverged from Trump on specific policy issues or minimized their political ties to him. Policy disagreements were the most frequent cause of friction, appearing in 23 races. Notably, 12 candidates focused their divergence on the conflict with Iran, with some calling for an end to fighting to address rising gas prices and economic pressures.
Additionally, 12 candidates have removed Trump’s name or imagery from their official campaign websites. This trend suggests an effort to appeal to independent voters while avoiding a total break with the party leader. The White House has defended Trump, calling him the party’s ‘unequivocal leader’ and ‘unmatched motivator.’
