Republican healthcare and social program cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill

The One Big Beautiful Bill, supported by Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, introduces significant changes to healthcare, food assistance, and financial protections. While marketed as relief for working Americans, the legislation includes provisions that critics argue will increase financial instability for vulnerable populations.

Key impacts include new Medicaid work requirements and more frequent eligibility reviews, which threaten coverage for adults with irregular work hours. Additionally, the removal of ACA subsidy-repayment caps and shorter retroactive Medicaid coverage may increase medical and tax liabilities for households. The bill also restricts insurance assistance and Medicare eligibility for certain legally present immigrants.

Regarding student debt, new loans will lack unemployment and economic-hardship deferments. Reports indicate that the effects of these policies are being phased in to minimize immediate political impact, with many significant consequences scheduled to take effect in 2027. Data shows that Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program enrollment declined by over 6 million between January 2025 and June 2026, including 2.5 million children.
