Republican lawmakers distance themselves from Trump policies

Republican lawmakers are increasingly distancing themselves from President Donald Trump's policies as concerns grow regarding the 2026 midterm elections. This trend is visible in traditionally strong Republican territories, particularly in Iowa, where representatives Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks voted to limit presidential war powers, and Senate candidate Ashley Hinson called for an immediate end to the conflict with Iran.

In addition to disagreements over foreign policy and tariffs, some Republicans are questioning the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In Kansas, Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall expressed concern over ICE operations in the southwestern part of the state, which target areas with large meatpacking populations. The senators urged the agency to improve coordination with local law enforcement to avoid chaos for businesses and schools.
