Republican Turkish Party opposes election law changes

The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) has expressed opposition to a proposed amendment to the Election and Referendum Law, which was recently passed by committee and sent to the General Assembly. The party argues that fundamental changes to the electoral system should not be implemented so close to an election, suggesting that such timing risks turning democratic reform into a tool for short-term political calculations.

CTP maintains that any overhaul of the voting system must be comprehensive and aimed at strengthening voter will, political participation, and administrative stability. The party advocates for a system where voters choose based on political programs and policies rather than personal relationships or complex candidate preferences.

To ensure legitimacy, the CTP proposes that changes be handled by a broad-based Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee. This committee would include input from political parties, legal experts, academia, professional organizations, and civil society to ensure that reforms promote justice in representation rather than providing an advantage to specific individuals or parties.
