Republicans focus on crime and immigration in midterm campaigns

Republicans are centering their midterm election campaigns on law and order, focusing on issues such as violent crime, public disorder, and illegal immigration. This strategy aims to go on the offensive in a challenging political year where voters have expressed dissatisfaction with the cost of living and international conflicts.

Republican candidates and leaders are utilizing political advertising to warn against Democratic efforts to ‘defund the police.’ In several states, including Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Texas, and Wisconsin, gubernatorial candidates are attacking Democratic opponents for being weak on crime. For example, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has criticized Democratic nominee Gina Hinojosa regarding bail legislation for illegal immigrants charged with violent crimes.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has cited record low violent crime rates as a result of emphasizing the rule of law, while former President Donald Trump has used campaign rallies to warn about border security and past crime levels. In response, Democrats have attempted to counter these narratives by recruiting candidates with law enforcement experience and highlighting their own anti-crime initiatives.
