Republicans move to block Trump's Russian diesel import deal

Republican lawmakers are moving to block President Donald Trump’s decision to lift restrictions on Russian diesel imports. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, announced plans to introduce a bipartisan bill titled the ‘Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act’ to prohibit any purchase of Russian oil.

Fitzpatrick’s initiative is supported by Representative Don Bacon, who has agreed to serve as a co-sponsor. The lawmakers aim to use a special process to bring the bill to a House vote, though the effort may be symbolic as the current congressional term ends in January. The move follows Trump’s announcement of an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply 300,000 tons of diesel to the US and global markets.

President Trump has dismissed critics within his own party, including Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, and John Curtis, stating they ‘can’t really be serious.’ Trump defended the deal as beneficial for the global market and domestic farmers, while noting that the US could also impose its own caps or restrictions on diesel if necessary. Opponents argue the move allows Russia to generate revenue to continue the war in Ukraine.
