Republicans promote One Big Beautiful Bill Act tax cuts
Congressional Republicans are promoting the tax policies established by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) as midterm election early voting begins. During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, Chairman Jason Smith defended the legislation against Democratic criticisms regarding the cost of living, noting that the act provided $3.3 trillion in tax cuts for families and small businesses.
The OBBBA made several provisions permanent, including the reduced tax rates from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a $15,000 standard deduction, and a $2,000 Child Tax Credit. It also secured business tax credits for capital investments, research costs, and debt interest deductions, alongside a 20% QBI deduction for small businesses. Furthermore, the bill allows income from tips, overtime, and Social Security to be tax deductible for eligible Americans over the next four years.
The Tax Foundation estimates these provisions will reduce individual taxes in every state and contribute to the creation of up to 828,000 full-time equivalent jobs nationwide by 2025.
