Republicans urge end to Iran war amid rising fuel prices

Several Republican senators and candidates in competitive midterm contests are calling for a rapid conclusion to the military conflict with Iran, citing the economic impact of soaring fuel prices. Rising diesel and gasoline costs, particularly in the Midwest, have become a primary driver for this shift in rhetoric.

Among those urging a swift end to the war are Senators Dan Sullivan, Susan Collins, and Jon Husted, as well as candidates Tom Tiffany and Mike Rogers. Iowa Senate nominee Ashley Hinson has also called for an “immediate end” to the conflict, suggesting relief measures such as suspending the federal gas tax and reinstating biodiesel tax credits to assist farmers and truckers.

These calls for de-escalation come despite some of these officials' recent voting records. For instance, Hinson recently voted against a War Powers resolution intended to restrict presidential authority regarding U.S. forces in Iran, stating she does not believe another floor resolution is necessary but rather a resolution to the war itself.
