Republika Srpska marks 35th anniversary of National Assembly founding
Political leaders and officials in Republika Srpska are commemorating the 35th anniversary of the founding of the National Assembly. The institution was established on October 24, 1991, in Sarajevo, originally as the Assembly of the Serbian People in Bosnia and Herzegovina, following decisions by Serbian representatives elected in the 1990 multi-party elections.
During ceremonies held in Pale, officials including Milorad Dodik and Nenad Stevandić emphasized the assembly's historical role in the creation and institutional development of Republika Srpska. They described the 1991 decision as a vital response to political attempts to marginalize the Serbian people and as a foundational step toward the entity's current constitutional status.
Speakers noted that the assembly has served as a guardian of national identity and legal continuity through various historical challenges, including the war in the 1990s and subsequent political shifts. The anniversary included commemorative activities such as laying wreaths at the ‘Sabornost’ monument and holding a formal academy.
