Labor disputes and employment subsidies reported across the Balkans

Various labor and legal issues are affecting workers across the Balkans. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, miners in Kakanj have ended their protest after receiving August wages and health insurance verification. However, miners in Breza, Bila, and Zenica face ongoing struggles; Breza and Bila workers are planning protests at the Elektroprivreda BiH building due to unpaid wages, while Zenica miners have threatened a hunger strike over four months of unpaid earnings.

In Republika Srpska, the Union of Syndicates has warned of employers illegally manipulating annual leave by counting weekends as vacation days or promising cash payments for unused leave, which is prohibited by law. Additionally, in Serbia, legal experts highlight that landlords must facilitate tenant registration to avoid fines ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 dinars.

In Croatia, Minister Alen Ružić announced a support measure for employers on the fire-damaged island of Brač. The program will provide subsidies of up to 1,500 euros per month to cover gross salaries for workers on indefinite contracts, aiming to preserve jobs and local businesses through May 2027.
