Rescue dogs provide critical aid in earthquake response operations

Search and rescue dogs play a vital role in emergency operations, using their sense of smell to locate individuals trapped under debris during natural disasters. These animals undergo years of rigorous training to handle extreme temperatures, loud noises, and high-stress environments, often accessing cavities unreachable by human teams.

Following earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia, international canine units have been deployed to assist. For instance, the Murcia Firefighters' canine unit, in collaboration with the NGO IAE Rescue, traveled to La Guaira to assist after the June earthquakes. Additionally, Luka, a dog from the Badajoz Provincial Fire Consortium, participated in international solidarity missions, locating six bodies before passing away following surgery.

In a continuation of this legacy, Karu, the daughter of the rescue dog Tsunami, has begun her initial search and rescue training. Tsunami was a prominent figure in the La Guaira rescue operations. According to the association Perros Extremos, Karu belongs to a significant lineage of working Border Collies, including ancestors Kapuy and Diogo, and is being prepared to continue the work of providing aid in disaster zones.
