Research examines European waste wood recycling and circular economy frameworks

Academic research from Vienna explores the technical and regulatory frameworks necessary to establish a circular economy for waste wood in Europe.

One study investigates how machining techniques and recycling cycles affect the properties of particleboards made from waste wood. By comparing traditional hammer mills with adaptive cutting mills over six recycling cycles using urea-formaldehyde resin, the research examines impacts on density, moisture, and strength. The study highlights how chip geometry and processing methods influence the quality of recycled materials.

Another study examines the waste management frameworks for treated wood across several European countries, including Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom. The research identifies significant legal heterogeneity, noting that differences in limit values, classifications, and definitions between nations pose challenges to the development of a stable secondary raw material market. While Austria and Germany have specific regulations for wood recycling, discrepancies remain even between these two neighbors.
