Research examines medication impacts and elderberry benefits on gut microbiome
Recent scientific studies have highlighted the significant influence of various substances on the human gut microbiome. An analysis published in the journal ‘mSystems’ involving 2,509 participants revealed that long-term changes in gut microbiota can persist even after the cessation of certain medications.
While the impact of antibiotics is well-documented, researchers found that antidepressants (such as SSRIs), beta-blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and benzodiazepines also cause lasting alterations. In some cases, these disruptions lasted for several years. The study noted that the frequency of medication use over a five-year period correlated with the severity of the microbiome changes, with benzodiazepines showing an impact comparable to broad-spectrum antibiotics.
In a separate clinical trial conducted by Washington State University, researchers investigated the metabolic effects of elderberry juice (Sambucus nigra). The study, which involved 18 overweight adults, found that consuming 340 ml of elderberry juice daily for one week led to positive shifts in gut bacteria, including increases in Firmicutes and Actinobacteria and a decrease in Bacteroidetes.
Additionally, the elderberry juice consumption was associated with improved metabolic markers, including a 24 percent average reduction in blood glucose levels and enhanced fat oxidation. Researchers noted that while these results are promising, larger studies are required to confirm the findings.
