Research explores alternative youth culture in 1990s Lithuania

Research presented at the Lithuanian Council of Science (LMT) conference ‘Science Summer with LMT’ explores the alternative youth culture in Lithuania during the 1990s. Conducted by Mūza Svetickaitė during a summer internship at Vilnius University, the study examines the daily lives, creativity, and lasting memory of these subcultures.

Svetickaitė’s findings suggest that the 1990s in Lithuania cannot be defined by a single narrative. While the era is often publicly associated with wild capitalism and crime, various cities developed distinct youth communities with their own music, gathering places, and traditions.

A notable example is Utena, which featured an active metal and alternative music scene. During this period, bands formed, fanzines were published, and concerts were held in diverse locations ranging from basements and schools to libraries and factories. While outsiders sometimes referred to Utena as the ‘metal capital’ of Lithuania, for local residents, this environment was a natural part of daily life.
