Research explores data and educational approaches to Alzheimer’s and dementia

Recent research highlights different approaches to addressing the rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). One study focused on the technical feasibility of using real-world data to identify risk factors. Researchers identified 401 factors across 10 categories and found that while most conditions, medications, and biomarkers are accessible through structured Electronic Health Records (EHRs), clinical narratives are essential for capturing information not found in structured data. However, evaluating genomic factors remains a challenge due to infrequent documentation in medical records.

Complementing the data-driven approach, a qualitative study at Thomas Jefferson University examined the impact of the ARTZ @ Jefferson program. This humanities-based medical education initiative pairs health-studies students with people living with dementia and their care partners through arts-based sessions. Alumni reflections indicated that the program fostered a humanist approach to healthcare, leading to increased empathy and a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of those affected by dementia.
