Research explores genetic longevity and supplement impacts on brain health
New research suggests that family history plays a significant role in longevity and health outcomes. A study analyzing data from the LonGenity, New England Centenarian Study, and UK Biobank found that descendants of centenarians may possess biological advantages. After tracking participants for up to 29 years, researchers observed that descendants of people who lived to at least 100 had a 42 percent lower risk of death, a 33 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and a 32 percent lower risk of high blood pressure compared to a control group.
Separately, studies are re-evaluating the efficacy of common supplements for brain health. Research published in BMJ Open involving over 5,000 Americans suggested that vitamin D supplementation might be associated with a faster decline in cognitive and executive functions in individuals who already have normal vitamin D levels. Similarly, an analysis of omega-3 supplements indicated a potential link to faster deterioration in memory and cognitive tests among users. Researchers noted that these findings challenge the assumption that such supplements are universally beneficial for preventing cognitive decline and emphasize the need to consider individual nutrient levels.
