University of Amsterdam study reveals female brain changes during hormonal transitions

A longitudinal study published in Nature Communications by neuroscientists at the University of Amsterdam has revealed how the female brain undergoes structural changes during three major hormonal transitions: puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

Using MRI neuroimaging on a large sample of participants, researchers found that both puberty and pregnancy are associated with a significant reduction in cortical grey matter volume. In pregnancy, this reduction is specifically localized in regions related to social cognition, empathy, and the maternal bond, which researchers describe as an adaptive “fine-tuning” rather than cognitive decline.

In contrast, the study found that grey matter volume remains relatively stable during menopause. This suggests that the brain responds differently to hormonal shifts in menopause compared to the drastic reorganizations seen in earlier life stages. The findings highlight a historical gap in neuroscience, where studies focusing exclusively on female biological processes have represented only a small fraction of total research.
