Research funding expands for diabetes and obesity studies

Significant research funding has been allocated to investigate the biological drivers of diabetes and obesity. The Novo Nordisk Foundation has committed $53 million to renew and expand the Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease at the Broad Institute. This transatlantic collaboration between the U.S. and Denmark aims to use artificial intelligence, large-scale data, and advanced cellular models to identify new therapeutic targets for cardiometabolic diseases.

In the United States, Wayne State University has received a $5.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study insulin resistance. The five-year project focuses on the molecular mechanisms in skeletal muscle that explain why some lean individuals develop insulin resistance while others with obesity remain insulin sensitive. Researchers will compare muscle tissue across four groups to identify therapeutic targets that could prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes.
