Research highlights 'phubbing' risks to family communication
A study conducted by Professor Tuncay Dilci of Sivas Cumhuriyet University, involving 1,057 participants, has revealed the growing impact of 'phubbing'—the act of ignoring others in favor of a smartphone—on family dynamics.
The research, titled 'dijitanaliz', indicates that digital device usage is causing significant communication breakdowns. Key behaviors identified include reduced eye contact, looking at phones while speaking, and engaging with screens while others are talking. These behaviors lead to social isolation and a sense of alienation among family members even when living in the same household.
Professor Dilci noted that this constant interruption of attention can lead to dissatisfied relationships, family friction, and even divorce. The study found that 37.8% of participants showed high levels of social isolation and digital preoccupation, while 54% showed moderate levels.
