Research identifies biological and environmental risk factors for childhood food allergies

Recent medical research has identified significant biological and environmental predictors for the development and persistence of childhood food allergies.

A comprehensive review published in JAMA Pediatrics, analyzing 190 studies involving 2.8 million children across 40 countries, identified infant eczema, early antibiotic use, and the delayed introduction of allergenic foods as major risk factors. Children with atopic dermatitis in their first year faced nearly four times the odds of developing food allergies. The study suggests that food allergy trends result from a complex interaction between genetics, skin barrier health, the microbiome, and environmental exposures.

Complementary research from the COCOA study focused on the biological mechanisms of persistent allergies. Researchers found that children with early persistent food allergies exhibited distinct placental DNA methylation and inflammatory profiles. Specifically, hypermethylation of the RPS6KA2 and GCSAML genes was observed in children with persistent allergies. These children also showed lower levels of the regulatory cytokine IL-10 and elevated levels of Th2 cytokines, such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-6, compared to those without allergies or those who experienced early remission.
