Research links Alzheimer pathology to Parkinson disease progression
Recent scientific studies have identified a significant link between Parkinson disease and Alzheimer disease pathology, a combination often referred to as copatology. Research published in npj Parkinson’s Disease by investigators from Tor Vergata University of Rome and Neuromed has found that patients exhibiting both conditions often show more intense inflammatory responses in their blood cells.
In a separate study led by Mayo Clinic experts and published in the Journal of Parkinson’s Disease, researchers analyzed brain tissue from autopsies to examine the prevalence of amyloid pathology. The findings indicate that women with Parkinson disease, particularly those who develop dementia, exhibit a higher burden of Alzheimer related brain changes, such as amyloid plaques, compared to men with the same condition.
