Research links early-life stress and internet use to mental health risks

New research highlights how early-life stress can cause lasting biological changes in the brain. A study conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Princeton University, published in the journal *Neuron*, found that childhood trauma can create epigenetic changes in dopamine-producing neurons within the ventral tegmentum. These changes make certain genes more easily activatable, potentially increasing long-term vulnerability to anxiety, depression, and other affective disorders in adulthood.

In a separate study by the University of Duisburg-Essen published in *PLOS One*, researchers investigated the link between problematic internet use and mental well-being among 900 adults in Germany. The findings indicate that excessive online activity is correlated with higher stress levels and diminished mood. The study defines problematic use through functional impairments, noting that an internal compulsion to continue usage despite negative consequences is a primary driver of this behavioral pattern.
