Research links increased migraine risk in women with endometriosis
A meta-analysis of 35 studies involving over 13 million women has revealed a significant connection between endometriosis and migraines. The research indicates that women with endometriosis are more than twice as likely to suffer from migraines.
Lead researcher Dr. Johannes Wubbest Walde-Emanuel of the Mayo Clinic noted a diagnostic gap, as these conditions are often treated by different specialists, leading doctors to overlook their potential connection. While short-term medical records missed up to 90 percent of women suffering from both disorders, patient interviews were highly successful in identifying the overlap.
Experts suggest that the two conditions may share a common pain pathway. This discovery could lead to new treatment approaches, such as using migraine medications that block the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) to help alleviate endometriosis-related pain. Medical professionals are encouraged to cross-screen patients for both conditions.
