Research links low daily sunlight exposure to increased dementia risk

A new study involving over 87,000 adults suggests that insufficient exposure to bright light during the day may increase the risk of developing dementia. Researchers, including those from Guangzhou Medical University, found that individuals exposed to less than 42 minutes of bright light per day faced a higher risk than those in brighter environments.

The study utilized wearable devices to track light exposure levels. Results indicated that people exposed to light levels above 1,000 lux, comparable to an outdoor setting on a cloudy day, had a 16 percent lower risk of dementia. This finding was noted as a stronger indicator than six other known risk factors.

In a separate context, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released an updated second edition of its dementia prevention guide. The guide emphasizes that while no definitive cure exists, many risk factors are modifiable. Recommendations focus on healthy lifestyle habits, managing related health conditions, and reducing environmental risks, such as air pollution.
