Research Links Memory Retrieval Deficits to Increased OCD Symptom Severity

A study published in *Behaviour Research and Therapy* found that people with obsessive‑compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit overgeneral autobiographical memory, recalling broad categories of events rather than specific details. This memory pattern is associated with deficits in mental flexibility and working memory, which correlate with greater severity of OCD symptoms. The research, led by Liru Qian of Central South University, compared 112 OCD patients with 101 healthy controls and determined that the memory impairments occur independently of mood disturbances, suggesting new targets for psychological therapy.

The findings highlight the role of executive‑function deficits in OCD and may inform future interventions aimed at improving memory specificity to alleviate symptom burden.
