Research reveals auditory capabilities of blacktip sharks
A study led by researchers from Florida Atlantic University has revealed that blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) can perceive sound frequencies at distances of up to 74 meters.
Using underwater speakers to broadcast variable frequencies and drones to monitor shark reactions in the shallow waters of southeast Florida, researchers determined that these predators use sound to map their environment, helping them identify prey and potential dangers such as boats or other predators. While shark ears consist of modest orifices rather than external structures, sound propagates efficiently through their internal auditory structures in aquatic environments.
