Research reveals solitary bee species possess sharper vision than honey bees
New research from Lund University and Adelaide University indicates that several smaller, solitary bee species possess sharper eyesight than the honey bee, which has traditionally been the primary model for studying insect vision.
By analyzing electrical signals from light-sensitive cells, researchers found that bumblebees and three species of solitary bees exhibited higher visual resolution than worker honey bees. Notably, the small Australian blue-banded bee, Amegilla murrayensis, demonstrated visual performance comparable to honey bee drones, despite its much smaller size. This finding challenges previous assumptions regarding the direct relationship between eye size and visual acuity.
Understanding these diverse evolutionary adaptations in compound eyes could potentially inspire new technologies, such as compact visual sensors and autonomous robotics.
