Research shows 80% of young adults exhibit early cardiovascular and metabolic risk signs
New research indicates that a significant portion of young adults may already exhibit early signs of cardiovascular, kidney, or metabolic (CKM) disease. A study involving 1,283 participants with an average age of 23 found that 80% showed at least one sign of risk.
Researchers emphasize the interconnectedness of the heart, kidneys, and metabolism, noting that conditions like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure can exacerbate one another. CKM syndrome is categorized into stages ranging from Stage 0 (no identified risk factors) to Stage 4 (established cardiovascular disease such as heart failure or stroke).
Medical experts suggest that because many risk factors like high cholesterol or high blood pressure may be asymptomatic, early awareness and lifestyle interventions—such as healthy eating, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco—are critical for long-term prevention before symptoms manifest.
