Research vessel Tara targeted in armed boarding near Wewak
The research schooner Tara, operated by the Tara Ocean Foundation, was targeted in an armed boarding near Wewak, Papua New Guinea, on the night of August 20, 2026. Approximately ten armed men approached the vessel in a motorboat and forced their way onto the ship while it was at anchor.
The assailants threatened the officer on duty and several crew members, demanding money and valuables. During the five-minute encounter, the intruders stole computer equipment and personal belongings. While the crew is safe, one member sustained minor injuries.
The incident occurred as the vessel was preparing to depart following a two-and-a-half-month scientific research mission as part of the Tara Coral 2026–2028 expedition. Following the attack, the foundation activated crisis and psychological support cells and alerted local authorities and the embassy. The schooner has since resumed its journey toward Palau.
